Diesel and Petrol Engine

It is common for a non-technical person to get confuse between a diesel and a petrol engine mostly in terms of their technicality and uses. In this article, a non-technical person will easily understand the difference between the two engines.

An internal combustion engine operates either in two strokes or four strokes. In simple terms, we can say that in two strokes every revolution of the crankshaft has a power stroke and in four strokes, there is one power stroke for every two revolutions of the crankshaft.

What is an SI Engine?

SI engine uses a spark plug to initiate combustion in the combustion chamber. There is a carburetor in the SI engine which sucks the air from outside and mixes it with the fuel. As air fuel mixture is injected in the combustion chamber and spark plug provides a spark. It uses petrol as the working fluid. The air-fuel mixture ratio is provided and controlled by the carburetor. The compression ratio is lower and lies between 10:1 and 14:1. Its efficiency lies between 20% and 35%. Due to presence of the spark plug in the SI engines, it easily starts during winters. Moreover, it has low vibration and low noise production. The cylinder block is also lightweight and maintenance cost is lower than a diesel Engine.

What is a CI Engine?

Compression-Ignition (CI) engine is also known as the Diesel engine. It is also an internal combustion engine like the SI engine which uses fuel and air for combustion. Contrarily to the SI engine, in the CI engine, there is no spark plug. The combustion is initiated by increasing the temperature of the air inside the chamber. A diesel engine is built robustly to withstand high temperature and high compression ratio, therefore they have more weight than an SI engine. In addition, it produces more torque and better fuel economy than an SI engine. It has the highest thermal efficiency in internal combustion engines because of its high compression ratio which lies between 14:1 and 25:1. This makes it to reach upto an efficiency of 55%.

These are some of the basic differences between diesel engines and petrol engines. Apart from these, internal combustion engines is differentiated in terms of their designs, mounting, fuel type used, positioning of the spark plug in SI engines and positioning of the fuel injector in CI engines, power capacity, etc.

Well, now you can say which type of the engines you travel on and how do they work.

PRIDE OF BIKERS

Royal Enfield Bullet

The Royal Enfield Bullet was originally a British overhead valve single cylinder four-stroke motorcycle made by Royal Enfield.

I think at some point of time we have all seen and envied a group of Royal Enfield Bullet riders out on a Sunday ride whether in the city or on the highway; and I was yearning for my service intervals so I could finally go on a long ride without having to worry about damage to the engine during the run-in period. A day was just around the corner and that’s when I found out about this, who were organising a ride. The distance was short and perfect for my yet-inexperienced self.

I guess at some point of time or the other we all tend to overestimate our endurance, skill levels or are just plain overconfident and underprepared. I once attended a night-out in pouring rain without any rain gear. Even before we had reached our destination I was chilled, sleepy and had delayed reactions. The return leg of the journey was just as difficult, struggling to stay awake, muscles aching for mercy. When the pit stop was called, I was literally praying for the ride to end soon. A lot of my false confidence evaporated that day, and yet Gokarna was the biggest eye opener of them all. pouring rain, sleep, fatigue… Let’s just say I learnt overnight what my own limits were and how important it is to never go on any ride under prepared.

As I attended more and more rides, my confidence level grew as well as my riding with Royal Enfield Bullet. I was now fairly confident of doing a 500 kilometre round trip with far less fatigue.

I firmly believe that is important to respect your motorcycle for what it is, rather than vent your frustration for what it is not. If you want your street fighter to behave like a highway cruiser, well, sorry to disappoint you. Motorcycles are made for a purpose and to try anything else on them will only wreck your engine, and possibly you too. Know your ride’s strengths and weaknesses; adapt your riding style accordingly and your bike will remain largely trouble free for years to come.

For anyone that loves their motorcycle (Royal Enfield Bullet in my case), the relationship between man and machine is special. Like any relationship, there are crests and troughs, there will be times when you are disappointed with each other, or you forget to take care of each other, despite all the happy moments you were meant to share. Love often blinds you from the side of each other you are not willing to see. Yet there is a deep underlying trust between you and the machine; I believe if it had a human voice it would tell you how much it loved you back.

THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE

BUGATTI CHIRON

Pure driving and pure adrenaline: BUGATTI is proud to introduce the CHIRON PUR SPORT1– a substantial and bold evolution of the CHIRON2 concept “Form follows performance”, making it the most agile and uncompromising CHIRON ever. Significant technological improvements on the chassis, gearbox and engine push the physical boundaries and the limits of driving dynamics once again further. More radical, more aggressive and more dramatic, the CHIRON PUR SPORT is BUGATTI’s pinnacle of driving dynamics, enabling straightforward handling on winding roads and providing an impelling thrill behind the wheel.  A “Pur Sang d’Automobiles” through and through!

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Chiron, Chiron Sport, and Chiron Super Sport 300+ are motivated by an 8.0-liter 16-cylinder powerplant. This beast of an engine employs four turbochargers to generate a mighty 1500 horsepower and 1180 lb-ft of torque. Bugatti claims that the Chiron makes the dash from zero to 60 mph in a mere 2.3 seconds, and it has a top speed of 261 mph. If the Chiron’s standard engine doesn’t quench your thirst for speed, step up to the Chiron Super Sport 300+.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

As one would expect from a car with a 1500-hp engine, the Chiron won’t win any points for being eco-friendly. According to the EPA, the 2019 Chiron achieves mileage (we hesitate to use the words “fuel economy”) of 9/14 mpg city/highway.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Chiron’s exterior features a C-shaped design cue carved into its side panels, and this element is also present within the car’s cabin. It’s reflected in the graceful curve of a partition that separates driver and passenger. Bugatti has dressed the Chiron’s cabin in top-of-the-line materials, and the interior bears space-age styling elements that add whimsical charm.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Chiron’s singular focus on performance brings with it compromises on the infotainment front. This Bugatti functions much like a race car, and it has the stripped-down tech content to match. There’s no infotainment screen, and features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability aren’t offere.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2020 Bugatti Chiron hasn’t been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It’s not offered with commonly available driver-assistance features such as blind-spot monitoring.

chassis and suspension setup

Bugatti specifically configured the chassis and suspension to be uncompromising on winding roads – without any detrimental effect on comfort. A new chassis setup featuring 65% firmer springs at the front and 33% firmer springs at the rear, an adaptive damping control strategy geared towards performance as well as modified camber values (minus 2.5 degrees) guarantee even more dynamic handling and added agility in bends.

We can also call it DRIVING BEAST.
